Yeast infection affects as many as 75% of the female population. For many in this category, the problem can be a recurrent one which requires constant preventative measures to keep it at bay.
What Is A Yeast Infection?
Contrary to what a lot of people think, yeast in the vagina is actually a very common and natural thing. In small amounts, yeast is harmless and won't bother you at all. There is a whole range of bacteria and fungus in the vagina that help regulate and control each other, and while it sounds disgusting, it's actually a very good way of keeping something like yeast from getting out of control. A yeast infection is when the amounts of yeast in the vagina multiply at such a rapid rate that makes them hard to control without intervention. The majority of yeast infections are caused by Candida Albicans which is just one type of yeast.
You will usually notice when you have a yeast infection because of the itchiness around the area, the pain and the burning sensation everytime you have sex or urinate. Luckily for you, it's actually an incredibly easy problem to solve, and with the right pills and the right medicine, it should clear up in no time.
It can be hard to find the cause of yeast infection. Some women are just genetically more likely to contract it regardless of what medicine they take, and their lifestyle habits. For others, the healthy balance of bacteria and fungus in your vagina can be disrupted from medicine you are currently taking, diabetes, unbalanced hormones and inadequate vitamins in your body. All of these can be the cause of yeast infection, and may require further examination to ensure it doesn't keep coming back due to the underlying cause.
How To Know If You Have A Yeast Infection?
The symptoms of yeast infection are pretty hard to ignore. The itching, the odorless white discharge and the pain should be a clear indication that something is wrong, and it's probably yeast infection. However, to be 100% sure, you should either see your doctor or buy a home screening kit from the pharmacy. The home screening kit will measure the acidity of the vagina and see whether it falls to the yeast infection level.
Best Candida Yeast Treatment
There are plenty of treatments available for yeast infections. If you do find the symptoms of the disorder, then you should go see a doctor right away. Although the symptoms of yeast infections are obvious, and it can often be self diagnosed, there are also other problems with similar symptoms that may require stronger antibiotics, or different treatment methods.
Cotton Or No Underwear
For those of you who bake, or did the yeast experiment in school with a petri disk, you'll know that yeast thrives in warm and moist environments. This is exactly the same for the Candida Albicans found in your vagina. If you want to solve the problem without the use of medicines, you can try wearing cotton underwear or just not wear any underwear at all to effectively "air out" the area. This is especially effective for people that suffer from recurring infections as a preventative measure.
Over The Counter Anti Fungals
If you're too embarrassed or don't have the time and money to see your doctor (something we strongly recommend you do), then you can actually buy over the counter anti fungals to clear away the yeast. These products are usually very effective, curing 80% to 90% of all cases of simple yeast infection. Treatment using these products can take anywhere from 1 day to a whole week which is why we'd recommend buying some soothing cream to help you alleviate the itching and soothe the pain.
If you've tried the over the counter anti fungals, and the problem still hasn't cleared up then it may be time to step up a gear and call up your doctor to arrange an appointment. Your doctor can often prescribe stronger anti fungals to get rid of the more stubborn yeast infection. If you find that you're also a recurrent sufferer of it, then the stronger prescription can help keep the yeast from coming back for a bit longer.
Over the counter anti fungal treatments are fast becoming less and less effective due to the yeast becoming resistant to the drugs. As we mentioned above, it's easy to mis diagnose yeast infection for a different and more serious infection which is why you need to see your doctor first. This is especially important if you are currently pregnant or suffering from a serious illness.
