What Is Candida Albicans?
C . Albicans is the type of yeast which causes the majority of yeast infections found in both women and men. This yeast infection can be on the skin, in the mouth, the genitalia and even your bloodstream. Candida Albicans are a one-celled fungi that can reproduce rapidly given the right environments. It's normal for all humans to have a bit of it in their system, however, some medicines and events can trigger the yeast to grow uncontrollable, which causes the yeast infection. When you read about, or talk to someone with yeast infection, 90% of the time, it's due to this particular strand of yeast, there are other strands that can cause the infection, but this is by far the most common and treatable one.
Symptoms Of A Candida Albicans Infection
The most common place for an outbreak of yeast infection is in the vagina. This area is particularly prone to infection because it is warm and moist, the perfect reproducing environment for all types of yeast. The symptoms can range from a small discomfort, to severe pain. Here's a list of the symptoms of Candida Albicans infection in the vagina:
Pain when passing water, or when having sexual intercourse
White, green or yellow discharge observed coming out of the vagina. This can sometimes be in the consistency of cottage cheese, but not always
An enlarged vulva which may or may not appear to be more red than normal
A discomfort in the area due to itchiness or a burning sensation
What Causes Candidiasis
Candidiasis is a result of something putting your body's self defence system off. This can stem from a wide range of different reasons and we'll go through some of them here.
A lot of women may have certain lifestyle habits that put them at much higher risk of developing a yeast infection.
Wearing tight underwear made from non porous material traps all the moisture in. This makes the area warmer and moister, making it a better environment for yeast to multiply. To remedy this, simply change your underwear to cotton or other breathable materials.
Some female hygiene products can result in changes in the pH level of your vagina. The soap you use, the scented spray or the bubbles you put into a bubble bath can result in more acidity, once again making it a better environment for yeast infection to happen.
Yeast needs sugar to thrive, so women with a high sugar consumption level are more at risk.
Women that are overweight are more prone to the infection because of the folds of skin that could develop around the vagina.
More often yeast infections are a result of using medicine and antibiotics to treat a some other disease or ailment. The bacteria in your vagina is essential in keeping a healthy balance of bacteria and fungi. Antibiotics will kill off some of healthy bacterias and therefore the yeast will be more likely to multiply.
Steroids can help make the yeast stronger and therefore reproduce more. In large doses, this will more than likely cause a yeast infection, but even in smaller doses such as with some creams with traces of steroids in them, you may be more likely to develop a yeast overgrowth.
For those of you who have been pregnant, you have more than likely suffered from yeast infections. Pregnancy does some crazy things to your body, and one of these things is changing up the hormone balance. These hormone changes can result in your vagina being more acidic than before, and cause candidiasis to occur or reoccur.
If you have a weak immune system, then you're also more likely to suffer from recurring yeast infections because your body simply can't fight them. Some illnesses, such as HIV, will shut down your immune system. This makes yeast infection much more likely, and a much bigger problem than in healthier individuals.
How Do You Get Yeast Infection?
Although we've listed the main causes of yeast infection above, the majority of cases are present in women that should not be particularly prone to it. Candidiasis can come on for no apparent reason, and it's hard to find the underlying cause of recurring bouts of it. If you do find yourself getting yeast infection multiple times a year, then you may need to look at other factors such as mental health, stress, physical state and general health to find out what might be causing the imbalance.
